Lake Taupo

The spectacular Lake Taupo is living up to the expectations of being one of the premier tourist destinations in the North Island of New Zealand. This inland sea spectacle deserves to be in your travel bucket list for so many reasons. The lake is actually in the caldera of one of the biggest super-volcanoes on earth. You only need to explore the lakeside to realize how beautiful and majestic the lake’s mountainous landscape is.

Activities

One main reason to visit Lake Taupo is the fact that it is a natural playground for thrill and adventure seekers. Here, you can spend days engaging into activities like boating, mountain biking and trout fishing. In fact, the lake region is widely known to be the best trout fishing in the world. If you are interested in catching huge brown and rainbow trout, plan your trip during winter when a large of fish swim to the rivers and streams to spawn. As for mountain biking, the Lake Taupo region features a number of easy to difficult biking tracks that brings you to luscious forests, rivers, and lakes.

Swimming is always fun at Lake Taupo, and the experience can be quite unique as you have the opportunity to enjoy the warm geothermal water. Other water-based activities conducted here are water-skiing and kayaking. One of the most notable kayaking destinations is Mine Bay because it is the site of the legendary Maori rock carvings, which can only be viewed from the water. The Otumuheke Stream at Spa Park, Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs, Wairakei Terraces Hot Pools, and AC Baths are some of the most frequented geothermal pools in the region.

The Hukafalls Jet is a tour company that takes you to a jet boat ride all the way to the base of the Huka Falls. The ride takes about half an hour and lets you explore the mighty river with its formidable rock cliffs and surrounding wild bush.

Sky Diving

Lake Taupo makes the ideal setting for skydives because of it beautiful surrounding landscape. Thus, it’s not surprising that it is the biggest commercial skydive drop zone in the world. The dive here allows you to freefall from 15,000 feet above the air at a speed of almost 200 kilometers per hour. There are three companies that offer tailor-made tandem skydiving in Lake Taupo. They let you choose a preferred drop zone and offers a video footage of the dive.

The lake itself is not the only main draw for the Lake Taupo region. Around the area, there are mountain peaks that are waiting to be conquered by skiers, trekkers and climbers. The Tongariro National Park is where you can further explore the incredible volcanic terrain, and walk the best hiking trails like the Tongariro Crossing. If you go north of Lake Taupo, you can find the Huka Falls, known for the thundering rush of water that spills dramatically over its cliff face at 220,000 liters every second.
